Writing CommunityWFWA’s writing community is where creativity and accountability come together. Whether you’re seeking quiet focus, constructive feedback, or mentorship from experienced authors, we offer a range of programs to help you grow as a writer and connect with peers who understand your journey. Writing DatesDaily virtual writing sessions held over Zoom. Log in, set your goals, and write alongside other members for focused, pressure-free productivity time. Writing Dates are WFWA’s version of a writing sprint, free for members and open every day of the week at various times. You’ll join a Zoom room with other writers, check in briefly, share your goals, and then mute your mic for a 90-minute writing block. Cameras are optional—you choose what makes you more comfortable…or more accountable!
Critique ProgramGet matched with a small group of fellow WFWA writers for six months of feedback, encouragement, and accountability. WFWA program coordinators sort participating writers into groups of 3–5, considering factors like sub-genre and writing experience (published, agented, prior critique experience, or background in writing/editing). Group members exchange chapters monthly and communicate via email.
Between cycles, you can find critique partners or accountability buddies in our Online Community forum. Beta Reader SwapNew in 2025, our Beta Reader Swap program offers reader-matching for writers with polished manuscripts ready for final-stage feedback before querying or publishing. Participants are paired one-on-one with another member who shares similar reading interests and experience level.
MentorshipThe WFWA Mentorship Program pairs writers working toward publication with experienced authors, editors, and book coaches. Mentees can learn directly from those who’ve walked the publishing path before them, while mentors can sharpen leadership and coaching skills and give back to the writing community. This program empowers WFWA to build a culture of generosity, learning, and professional growth.
The Mentorship Program is popular and mentees may only be matched once during their time in WFWA.
Affinity Groups
WFWA hosts several ongoing special-interest groups where members gather around shared genre interests and publishing goals. Historical Fiction Group Join a supportive community of writers passionate about historical fiction—from debut authors to multi-published professionals. The group meets weekly via Zoom (Tuesdays at 1:00 PM ET) to discuss craft, research, and the unique challenges of writing across eras and cultures, from 750 BCE to the 1970s. Expect camaraderie, mutual support, and discussions tailored specifically to the joys and challenges of historical fiction. Topics range widely and have included world-building, cultural appropriation, dual timelines, archival research, oral history, and more—chosen and led by members themselves. Indie Author Group A welcoming hub for writers pursuing or exploring self-publishing. Whether you're working on your first book or have indie titles under your belt, this group offers camaraderie, insight, and support for every stage of your publishing journey. Connect with fellow authors, swap resources, ask questions in the Online Community Indie Author Headquarters, or browse tips on our Memo Board. We're here to help you navigate the challenges—and celebrate the freedoms—of going indie.
