LEARNING FROM THE MASTERS: THE JOURNALS OF PUBLISHED AUTHORS WORKSHOP

REGISTRATION DATES: FEBRUARY 16, 2023 THROUGH MARCH 23, 2023

WORKSHOP DATES: MARCH 26 – APRIL 1, 2023

REGISTRATION FEE: $20

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

In 1951, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist John Steinbeck “warmed up his writing arm” with a letter to his editor each day before working on East of Eden. Those letters were later published as Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters. Crime novelist Sue Grafton (“A” is for Alibi) kept a journal for every book she wrote that included ideas, positive self-talk, and more to help her stay on track. Author Anne Lamott has written two memoirs that are formatted like journals, and Virginia Woolf’s diaries examined what it was like to be a female author in the world of writing and publishing during the 1930s and 40s.

It’s refreshing and renewing to read the journals of published authors and recognize some of our own struggles in the pages of those who forged successful careers before us. We’ll look at the journals of the authors mentioned and explore what we can learn from them and how we can emulate some of their personal writing habits to support our own lives and work.

Each lesson will include:

  • examples of journal entries
  • narrative lesson on a particular aspect of journaling for writers
  • an activity for you to try
  • discussion questions for deep learning

This workshop is one week in length. Lessons will be provided in a "text-based" format, meaning, the lessons will be placed as text within our forum AND a PDF of the exact same lessons will be available for you to download for study purposes. Lessons will be posted each day of the workshop. Joy E Held will check in periodically on the forum to respond to comments and questions. Commenting on the workshop will close beginning April 3, 2023. You will continue to have 30 days to access the workshop once commenting is closed, giving you the opportunity to visit the workshop and study and/or download the materials you wish to and view the recording. May 2, 2023, is the date this workshop will be archived and no longer accessible.

NOTE FROM THE WFWA WORKSHOP TEAM

This workshop is part of our new "BITE-SIZE LEARNING WORKSHOP" series which offers text-based learning, self-paced, and modest instructor interactions with a possible LIVE Q&A Session if needed.

Most of our Bite-Size Learning Workshops (BSLW) will have no pre-recorded videos. These workshops were designed to offer "text-based" learning with lessons posted daily or almost daily in our workshop forum.

BSLWs were designed with all member budgets in mind and to further opportunities for education. We also designed these workshops with busy lifestyles in mind. BSLWs are self-paced, meaning you visit the workshop forum on your terms, with no need to follow a rigid schedule. You interact with other workshop attendees and/or the instructor if you choose to. Our BSLWs on average will be one week in length, some a few days longer to fit in all the lessons if the instructor wishes to space things out a bit. Each workshop will also be available for a maximum of 30 days after the workshop closes to commenting beginning the morning after the workshop completion date (which will typically be a Sunday).

We will have one BSLW the last week of each month from February through November 2023.
